(AP) -- The drugmaker Pfizer has launched a Viagra-like treatment for men who have erectile dysfunction. But Pfizer still faces a hurdles to keep its product up.
The new product, which will be marketed by the drugmaker, will cost $35 a pill.
It won't be available to purchase in New York until June 11.
The drugmaker has been trying to keep Viagra out of the market since it was launched in the United States in 1998. That's because its patent for the drug has expired.
"We're trying to keep the patent on Viagra from being expiring," said Dr. Albert Bourla, a Pfizer spokesman.
The drugmaker said last month that the product would be launched by the end of this year. It has been working with drugmakers to help Pfizer get a new patent for the drug.
Viagra works by dilating blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the penis when a man is sexually excited.
But it won't be a new drug, said Bourla, who heads up the Pfizer subsidiary, Pfizer Inc., that sells the drug.
The drugmaker said that if the Viagra patent expires, it will sell the generic version of the drug on its website.
The new Viagra-like product will cost $35 a pill.
The generic Viagra, which costs $1 a pill, will be available for a period of six months or more after Pfizer receives final approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
But drugmakers will have to find a way to keep the generic versions of the drug off the market.
"The generic is a very difficult product to develop," said Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, a urologist at New York University School of Medicine in New York City.
Pfizer's patent on the drug expires in April 2014, but it's still expected to be available for purchase.
Dr. Katlowitz said that if Pfizer does not make a generic version of the drug, the company would be unable to launch the original product. "We're going to have to do a lot of research to find the best way to make the drug available," he said.
Pfizer spokesman David Hirsch said he had no comment on whether Pfizer will be able to sell the generic version of Viagra.
"If Pfizer does not launch a generic product, then I don't know about you," he said. "I don't know what is going to happen with it."
In addition to the generic Viagra, Pfizer has other drugs to help men who have erectile dysfunction.
John Lechleiter, an urologist with the New York City Department of Medicine's Infectious Diseases Unit, said he can't say how many cases of erectile dysfunction he had in his practice last year, or how many of his patients had a recent onset.
The company had about a 30 percent share of Viagra sales last year, while Pfizer's patent was worth more than $20 billion.
The drugmaker's patent on Viagra expired in 2006.
But Pfizer's patent for the drug expired in November 2012.
Robert G. Stearns, president of Pfizer's medical research unit, said that when the drugmaker's patent expired in March 2012, the drugmaker would sell its generic version.
Stearns said that Pfizer has been trying to sell its generic version of Viagra since it was launched in the United States in 1998.
And Pfizer's patent on the drug expires in June 2013.
In a statement to Bloomberg, Pfizer spokesman Phil Bredesen said, "Pfizer has submitted its abbreviated new drug application for the new drug class," and that the company had consulted with drugmakers before launching the generic version of Viagra.
Pfizer's patent on Viagra expired in 1999 and its generic drug launched in November 2000.
